Standing in the Sufi tradition with and through Sherif Baba, Meher Baba, Pir Zia Inayat Khan, and Pir Shabda Kahn, I am a Universalist Sufi and scholar holding a "Spiritual Visa" to explore all the world's noble and beautiful religions and spiritual traditions. This orientation stems from Meher Baba, Hazrat Inayat Khan, Lex Hixon (Nur Ashki al-Jerrahi), Fritjof Schuon, and Huston Smith.

As Associate Professor of Religion and Central Michigan University I teach courses in "World Religions," "Islam," "Sufism," "Mysticism," "Religions of India," and "Rock 'n' Roll and Spirituality."

My main research explores Sufi saints and holy people especially saints and mystics. My favorite poets are Hafiz and Rumi; I am currently researching the erotic metaphors in their poetry as an expressed metaphysics. I am also researching Meher Baba's role in the reorientation of Sufism in the West.

My 2013 book explores the spirituality and spiritual practice related to and modeled by the Islamic Green Man al-Khidr. Visit this site for more information:

My current research project is a study of Universal Sufism focused on Hazrat Inayat Khan, Sheri Baba, ad Meher Baba.

As a musician (guitar and saz) I also listen to and teach the music of the World's Religions in my teaching of the World's Religions.

I also explore and immerse myself in the meditations of Sufi zikr and Buddhist mediation.  In addition I practice Tai Chi Chuan and Falun Gong.

My children are William Paul Halman, Olivia Juliet Halman, and Cameron James Dunaway.
